melting, you’re a daydream: a story for queer brown girls

fifteen years after she left adya, pranjal reunites with her best friend and biggest what if at a book signing event.

this is a 5k word short story that contains:

  • trans femme bi POV // trans bi author
  • butch lesbian goodness
  • love letter to kolkata
  • catholic guilt
  • growing up queer and bengali

content warnings: mentions of societal butchphobia, transphobia and dysphoria. the story has a happy ending.

this story and characters are original property that belongs to me and if I find out that you have reposted/plagiarized it, I will take action. art is by @toripar.

if you like the story, do send me a review on this blog or on Instagram (@/sritamasen_). thank you.

‘Does such a thing as 'the fatal flaw,’ that showy dark crack running down the middle of a life, exist outside literature? I used to think it didn’t. Now I think it does. And I think that mine is this: a morbid longing for the picturesque at all costs.’

(love this book, some real dark academia vibes)

An essay defending Marlana in my mentions……. not when that ship was literally born out of horrible lesbian stereotyping and canon butch erasure take your fem4fem mayo yuri ELSEWHERE

“I want horror lesbians” I say. “Have you seen Bly Manor/Fear Street?” you ask me. Yes I have. I don’t want a sweet sapphic love story as a ray of hope in a horror show. I want monstrous women with Hannigram-esque toxic codependency and knife play and blood over their hands. I want women who poison each other and women who haunt each other. I want lesbian monsters and lesbian vampires and lesbian serial killers. I want body horror and grotesque sapphic imagery. I want them sexual and depraved and hungry. Hope this clears it up <3

Not the fem4fem closed mouth kissing couple with their whispery kaleidoscope sex scene where both actresses looked like they were reading instructions off a manual 😭

they also brutally tortured one of their abusers and murdered him so they could be together so…the criteria still fits lol. and even if liking malana or their sex scene is subjective (i have a soft spot for it since it aired when i was still figuring out my sexuality), it was still on a network television show that was already testing the censors. it’s not like the other sex scenes weren’t similarly shot! anyways whether you like it or not they had an influence in horror lesbian rep and you can’t demand more like them without acknowledging their impact 🤷🏻‍♀️

You go to the Goodreads review of a really well written and inventive literary fiction by an acclaimed, talented author, preferably an author of colour from the global south. “Too pretentious, trying too hard to be clever and deep” says the most popular review by someone with a big booktok/bookstagram. You go to their page. Their most favourite and highest rated books are The Raven Cycle, If We Were Villains, Daisy Jones and the Six and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. You close Goodreads, not merely with disappointment, but with a deeper understanding of literary comprehension in the 21st century.

so um….looks like Bradley Cooper (goy) has been cast to play Leonard Bernstein, a Jewish man, in his upcoming film Maestro (a biopic about a real Jewish composer). rather than hiring a Jewish actor to tell a story about a Jewish man, they cast a goy…who will be wearing a prosthetic nose.

and if that weren’t enough - they cast Carrie Mulligan, an Irish woman, to play Leonard’s wife…who was a Latina. and Maya Hawke, a white woman who is neither Latina nor Jewish, has been cast to play their daughter.

AND don’t forget that Bradley Cooper grabbed the rights to Bernstein’s music before Jake Gyllenhaal, A JEWISH MAN WHO WAS GOING TO MAKE A BIOPIC ABOUT BERNSTEIN, was able to. we could have had a respectful biopic about a Jewish man, told by Jews. instead we get this.

i…don’t have words to explain how insidious this is. the absolute goydacity to keep a Jewish man from telling this story, whitewash the other people in a true story, and to cast a goy instead of a Jewish person to tell a true story about a Jewish man, and have that goy wear a prosthetic nose. they would rather Jew-ify a goy than cast an actual Jew. i’m disgusted.

And for reference, this is the prosthetic nose side by side:

Disgusting.

every sapphic book i love → the henna wars by adiba jaigirdar

of course muslims can be gay. how can anyone think otherwise? The two aren’t mutually exclusive. I’m living, breathing proof.

It had such a brilliant premise but it was executed so mid.

Why did you feel the need to comment this on an edit about my favourite books? You can make your own post.

Being on the aromantic spectrum is normal and healthy.

Not identifying with the word love at all as an arospec is perfectly fine, and actually amazing and cool.

Not applying the concept of love to anything or anyone in your life is ok, it’s more than ok. It’s wonderful.

Aros are not mentally ill on the basis of being aro.

Aros are not unhealthy on the basis of being aro.

Aros are not inherently lonely on the basis of being aro (though aro loneliness is real and valid)

Fuck anyone who tries to tell you otherwise
